Legal Requirement
💡 Symbolic weddings are popular across both sides of the island — allowing full personalization without paperwork stress. We can help you with either legal or symbolic planning.
Because this island is split into two jurisdictions, legal requirements differ slightly depending on where you choose to marry:
Dutch Side — St. Maarten
For a legal civil marriage on the Dutch side:
Both partners must be 18+, and paperwork must be submitted at least 14 days before your ceremony date.
Required documents include: long-form birth certificates, passports, proof of marital status (declaration of singleness), and divorce/death certificates if applicable, all originals.
Apostille stamps are required for U.S. documents; Canadian documents need authentication and legalization.
Witnesses: 2–4 in the Marriage Hall, 6 for outdoor ceremonies.
Once approved, the civil registrar performs the official ceremony (formal vows cannot be altered).
French Side — Saint Martin
Legal civil weddings on the French side are held at the Collectivité’s Salles des Mariages (town hall).
The request must be submitted at least 14 days in advance, and a 10-day publication of banns must occur before the ceremony can take place.
Required documents include birth certificates (recent and translated with apostille if applicable), passports/IDs, proof of address, witness information, and a certificat de célibat (for non-French nationals).
French residency requirements vary by nationality (non-French couples often may marry without a residency period).
